Tentative Schedule

October

This moring I sent off a long e-mail to my best friend.  I needed to talk through my schedule and since she now lives in North Dakota and we can't have coffee and a chat, I did it virtually.  I thought I would share our TENTATIVE schedule here on the blog.  We'll take the first week or two and see how things go and adjust as needed.  I am guessing on times and really just put them there to see how long our day will play out.  Usually we fall into a routine and follow the schedule in order of subject rather than time.

8:00 - Family worship (we sing a hymn or two), read from the Bible - usually the Proverb for the day but some months we work through a book in the New Testament and read 1 chapter a day, then we read a chapter from Wisdom and the Millers but we've finished that book and I've got to order the next book. Actually it isn't the next in order but it is about missionaries and I thought it would be a good go along with our My Father's World Exploring Countires and Cultures study for the year.

8:30 - Handwriting/Copywork: The kids will finish up the alphabet handwriting practice per the teacher manual and then they work on copying the Bible. I've allotted 15 minutes for this but we only write for 5 minutes. We started copying the Bible a year and a half ago. We started with Ephesians 5 since that is what our church was memorizing together at the time. Then they chose different Psalms to copy. They each have a notebook that they use and I set the timer for 5 minutes and they write until the timer goes off and then finish the sentence they were on. I check their work - because this is handwriting/copywork time they are to do their best handwriting. Sometimes they must erase and write a word or two over. It is a very short lesson and Jon and Chris get a few verses copied. Andrew usually takes a bit longer although he is not required to. He chooses to continue working while I do Spelling with Chris.

8:45 - Spelling: with Chris. Christopher does Spelling Power

9:00 - Spelling: with Andrew - I am going to try Spelling Power with Andrew this year. We tried it last year but he had a hard time with it and I instead chose to teach him spelling with the Charlotte Mason style of teaching.  It seemed to work better for him because he HATES to get a word wrong and would end up in tears over Spelling power. If you want to know more about how I taught him last year, let me know. I would definitely choose that CM style of teaching for the first 3 grades. Christopher will begin working on his geography packet or take the dogs out for a potty break.

9:15 - Geography: I have allotted 45 minutes for this subject because I cannot remember how long it took when we did ECC before. We'll do our scheduled lessons and the boys will work on their geography packets. If there is extra time then I have found a few fun online games for the first couple of weeks that help them to place the states. If I see that we can finish this up in 30 minutes then i'll adjust our schedule as needed.
Jonathan has his own History curriculum that he is working through independently this year.

10:00 - break/snack:

10:15 - Math: Jonathan is trying Teaching Textbooks this year. I am looking forward to seeing how this works for him. Christopher is still using Math U See and Andrew is doing review. I got an ABeka math book that has colorful worksheets and he'll work on completing as many as he can in during math time.  When I am confident he's ready to advance we'll order his next Math U See student text.

10:45 - Reading: Andrew will have reading time with me each day for 15 minutes. I ordered some books about an Amish boy named Benjie from Pathway Publishing. We sit on the couch and he reads aloud to me.

11:00 - Spanish: I opted to try the Pimsleur Spanish program versus Rosetta Stone. We have 1 lesson a week and it is a listening lesson. They teach conversationally and so we listen to the same 30 minute lesson a minimum of 3 times per week but I'm aiming for 4 days a week with Friday's off. Andrew is required to listen but may quietly play or draw.

11:30 - Science: Jonathan is doing Apologia Chemistry, Christopher is doing Physical Science and Andrew is following the science plans in the Teacher Manual - although I MIGHT switch him to Apologia elementary because I LOVE their science so much!

12:00 - English/Literature: Everyone is working from Rod and Staff for grammar- the older boys read the lesson and do the work on their own and I correct it. Jonathan is reading two Shakespeare selections this year and Christopher will be reading one. Andrew and I read his Rod and Staff lesson together and then he does the work while I start lunch.

12:30 - Lunch

1:00 - Book Basket: I tacked book basket on to the end of our day because they can read while I clean up the kitchen and frankly I didn't have any place else to fit it it!

1:15 - Music/Art: I am hoping to do more arts and crafts with Andrew. We really slacked last year in this area and he hated school. He loves to be engaged and busy so I know he will enjoy it. We wont do it everyday but on the days we don't he will then have quiet time in his room for a bit.

Afternoon:
  • music- Everyone has piano practice and the older two also have guitar practice. When it isn't their turn for practice on the piano they'll do guitar.
  •  Reading: Jonathan and Christopher have time set aside each afternoon to read. We just slowly work through books. Some literature ones that I think they should read and be familiar with, others are Christian books such as Corrie Ten Boom, Elena, Tortured for Christ, Created to Work, etc.
  • Electives: The afternoon is also the time for them to work on their elective programs. Christopher is working on advancing in Civil Air Patrol and moving up in rank so he always has leadership reading and training to do in his book and online. Jonathan is doing a drafting course and also working on web design.
We will follow this schedule Monday through Thursday's with Fridays scheduled very lightly.  Usually my husband is home and I want the boys to be free to help their dad with our house construction, to run errands with him or as a family day.   On those weeks when my husband isn't home during our school hours, I have scheduled some different things to do.  We will have Math Game day, Journal Jar writing (they pick a prompt from our Juornal jar and then write), nature study, and maybe a special outing.

September Daybook

FOR TODAY:  Monday, August 26th, 2013

This morning Christopher and I went to my Chiropractor's appointment and then drove to a Teacher/Toy store.  It was AWESOME!!!  I know most homeschoolers balk at decorating the school room to resemble a classroom but I LOVE TO!  So many fun, brightly colored, posters, wall hangings and trims!

Store
Outside my window...  The sun is shining and it is hot, hot, hot out there!

I am thinking...  that I don't fit into boxes very well...  I'm me and I need to stop trying to cram myself into other peoples boxes.

I am thankful...  For a quiet day at home yesterday.

In the kitchen...  I stopped at the Lakewinds co-op in Chanhassen and got my lunch.  Some fresh blueberries and a power protein salad from the deli.

Lunch12

For dinner we are having lasagna and fresh garden green beans (not from my garden).

I am wearing...  Capri's and a white t-shirt.

I am creating...  Our schedule for the first week of school.

I am going...  to be staying inside for the rest of the day!

 I am reading...
Life Management for Busy Women

I am hoping...  Jonathan had a nice 1st day at his new job.

I am looking forward to...  school starting!!  :o)

I am learning...  to abide in HIM

Around the house...  we are sitting around chatting and waiting for Christopher's friend to arrive.  He is spending the afternoon and evening with us.

One of my favorite things...  an afternoon nap, which I'm off to do now.

A few plans for the rest of the week:  Coffee with a friend but other than that I have no plans!  The plan is to be home and working on school prep and getting a few small household tasks done.

Worn and Weary

Flower-graphics-4You've heard the saying, "You learn somehting new everyday," haven't you?  Well yesterday I learned something new.  Did you know you can dislocate a rib?  I didn't... but I do now and it wasn't pleasant.  At first I felt the pain and wasn't sure what had happened but then remembered that a few minutes earlier I was acting silly and dancing with my son, Christopher and twisted my body funny.   I iced the area thinking that I pulled a muscle and then I tried to take a nap but after 30 minutes of pain and trouble breathing I knew I needed to go to the chiropractor.  Dr. Logan fixed me up and as he adjusted the area I felt it pop back in.  He told me I would be sore for a few days and I am.   Bending down to pick something up is hard and sleeping was very painful.  Thankfully I have a bed that I can adjust the head and foot and was able to find a position that worked.

Isn't our body amazing!  For those of you who knew about my torn meniscus in my left knee, I am happy to report that after 8 weeks, much prayer, 24 chiropractic physical therapy treatments and some natural therapy I am pain free and surgery is not in my future.  Yay!  Strength is returning and the only area that I notice I am a little weak in is walking up the stairs.

As I was reading my Bible yesterday morning I read this...
He left Judaea, and departed again into Galilee.
And he must needs go through Samaria.
Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.
Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour.

Jesus was wearied with his journey!  Boy did that jump out at me because right now I have been feeling very overwhelmed and wearied.  Our Savior, God incarnate was confined to the limitations of a physical human body and was wearied.  When Jesus came to earth to take upon himself the curse of sin for us, He was subjected to physical infirmities in his body.  It was what I needed to read.  I needed to know that I am not alone and that He truly understands every little thing I am going through.

Sunday

Whooie, it is hot!!!  I think the projected high for today and tomorrow is 97 with temps into the 90's all week!  I think I'll be spending most of my week indoors, which will work out perfectly since this week is dedicated to getting the house in order and final school preparations completed.

My desk is cleaned off and I sorted through the drawers and dusted everything.  I hung up the world map along with a map of persecuted countries so that we can remember to pray for our persecuted brothers and sisters this year.  I have a few papers to file and need to sort through a few files in my cabinet but my teacher corner is looking pretty good.

249

Today, I am looking for some extra activities to go along with our 2 week study on the United States.  I found a few online geography games and art projects that we'll do.  I also spent the day making copies that we'll need for the first 6 weeks while studying North America.  Next on the list is to inter-library loan the books we'll need for our 2 week study on the United States & the desert.  These books go into what we call our book basket.  During our book basket time each day the kids spend 15 minutes reading/looking at any of the books from the basket.  I schedule book basket time for around 11:00 a.m. and I'm able to either do a quick chore, return a phone call or work on lunch prep. during that time.

Well, my break is over.  Back to work!  :o)

This and That

Good Friday morning!  It is a beautiful day here in MN.  The sun is out, the sky is clear and there is a soft breeze.  They say that hot and humid temps are coming for the later part of the weekend and into early next week but I'm not going to think about that.  *smile*

Today I am puttering around my home doing little jobs here and there.  I juiced this morning and then sliced ends and peeled carrots for the rest of the weekend.  It will make the tedious job of juicing go a little faster to already have this prep work done.

I have two loads of towels to fold, beds to strip, launder and then hang on the clothesline and the living room needs a vacuuming and dusting.  Andrew and I will also be making a Lemon Poke cake that we'll have for dessert after supper tonight.

I also hope to have some quiet time to read this afternoon or maybe take a little nap.  :o)
Scott, Jonathan and Christopher are outside siding the house.  It is looking so nice!  I can't wait to have it fully finished and start landscaping.  That wont be until next year but it will give me something to look forward to through the winter.

Enjoy the weekend!

Might Oaks

Antique-school-desk

Our 2013/2014 school year is getting closer to starting and I am super excited!  It almost doesn't seem possible that we will be starting our 9th year of homeschooling, that we've graduated one from homeschool and will have another graduate this year!  I am so thankful to be teaching and learning along with my children.  It is a blessing from the Lord that I don't take lightly or for granted.
Our students this year are:
  • Jonathan 12th grade
  • Christopher 9th grade
  • Andrew 4th grade
A few thoughts (the below is NOT a complete list of the subject and materials taught, just a few notes):
Jonathan has curriculum pieced in from quite a few different companies.  One new item is his Teaching Textbooks math for the year.  We have always used Math U See and have loved it but have had some trouble with Algebra and up so we are excited to see how this compares and works.  Jonathan is a very diligent student and is mostly independent, he will join us for Family Bible time in the mornings and for our daily Spanish lesson in the afternoons.  He will also be participating in our Fine Arts Fridays (composer, artist, poetry, Shakespeare and nature study).
Christopher will be starting highschool!  Christopher is the first of our children to be educated at home from the beginning.  Chris will be Joining Andrew and I for Geography/History with My Father's World Exploring Countries and Cultures.  I went back and forth on wether or not to include him with us or get a separate curriculum for him.  Chris has already done ECC (he was younger) but because we are looking at transitioning to ABeka History for Highschool and their recommendation for 9th grade is geography I decided to use what we had and save some money.   No "new" curriculum purchased for Christopher this year other than his consumable student math book from Math U See.  He'll also be using Apologia Science (physical) and Rod and Staff English and be joining us for Family Bible, Spanish and Fine Arts Fridays.
Andrew and I will be working through ECC together and I'm just as excited about going through it for the third time as I was the first.  :o)  I loved learning about the different countries and cultures around the world and I know Andrew will too.  I haven't decided yet if we'll use the suggested science that came with the package or if we'll use one of the many Apologia elementary science books we have.  We are also doing a review for the first half of the year in math.  He's not quite ready to move ahead and I think the review and extra practice will be good for him.

August Daybook

FOR TODAY ~ Monday evening, July 29th, 2013

Outside my window...  a beautiful Monday although I'm enjoying it from the inside today.

I am hearing... Canon in D

I am thankful for...

  • That my husband is home most weekends
  • For the funds available to purchase a few new curriculum choices for the year.
  • For the prayers of friends
Kitten Capades... Charlotte got her head stuck in a mason jar glass that we use for drinking.  There was a little bit of milk in the glass and she stuck her head in it to lick it out and then couldn't get her head out.  It took quite awhile for my husband to get her out.

In the kitchen...  Jonathan is making supper tonight since I am not feeling well.

I am wearing... my nightgown - I came home from church yesterday and went to bed.  I slept until 7 pm, got up and watched a movie with my family and went back to bed.  This morning I've still not felt good. I took another nap, shower and put on a new nightgown and am looking forward to going back to bed early tonight.
I am creating...  a prayer shawl

I am going...   keep praying for my children to know and love the Lord with all of their hearts, soul, mind and strength.

I am thinking... that it doesn't seem possible that I will have two children over the age of 18 in a few short days.   Here is a picture of three of the kids.  Samantha and then my sister Amanda who is holding Christoper and Jonathan, who will turn 18 on Saturday.'

Samantha and Jonathan - I believe this was 2006 or 2007.  They grow up so quickly.  Samantha is now 19 and Jonathan will be 18.

I am reading...  Tortured for Christ and His Protecting Hand

I am hoping...  that my allergies clear up - this is a repeat from last week.  From mid summer until a hard freeze I suffer from allergies.  Usually just a day or two a week but it is very draining on my body.

In the Learning Room... Everything is ready to begin.  All of the new curriculum we ordered is in!

Around the house...  Monday is laundry day and although I've been processing it, I haven't folded any yet.  I tried to do loads that wouldn't matter if they wrinkled a little.  I'm hoping the boys can have a folding party later tonight and get it folded for me.

I am pondering... how to best encourage and pray for my sweet friend, Beckie and her family.

A favorite blog post I read this last week... no new post this week.  I haven't had time to be reading online.

One of my favorite things...  campfires and S'mores.  Scott and the boys had a fire last night.  I couldn't join them because of being sick but they did bring me in a few s'mores.  Mmmm

A few plans for the rest of the week:  I am going to try to lay low and stay home as much as I can this week because we have a really busy weekend.  I have a chiropractor appointment and Bible study on Wednesday but other than that I am staying put and resting.

A peek into my day...  Nap time
