Friday Five

1.  There is a bright yellow male American Goldfinch flying right up next to the window.  I'm thinking he wants to come in and have a break from the wind.  :)  We've had so many beautiful birds at our feeders this week.  We've had an Oriole pair here for about 2 weeks and for the first time in the 5 years that we've lived here we saw a Purple Martin at the feeders.  I mentioned to Andrew yesterday in the car that we should pull out our Your Backyard bird video and watch it again to become familiar with some of the bird songs.

2.   Andrew's had an appointment with a Lyme Literate doctor (LLMD)  in the cities yesterday and it went very well.  He has acute Lyme disease which means that it just happened (vs. someone who has chronic Lyme).  Andrew is on a double antibiotic for 6 weeks, as well as a handful of natural and herbal supplements.

His treatment should be pretty straight forward and unless he develops other symptoms from co-infections or develops symptoms after his antibiotic treatment we wont need to go back to the LLMD.  Some of the challenges of the treatment for Andrew include staying out of the sun, which is very hard for a 10 year old boy after a long winter.  Thankfully it has been more overcast than sunny here in MN.  He is out in his sandbox now, which shaded most of the day.   Another challenge is making sure that he doesn't have dairy when he takes his one of his meds because it acts as a binder and binds up the medication, not allowing it to be distributed and absorbed.  While he would certainly love to have dairy, he transitioned well to a rice milk and cheese.  We are also avoiding gluten and sugar as much as possible and doing less meat to help his body have less inflammation.  The hardest thing for me is keeping track of and on time with his medications.  I set timers as reminders throughout the day.

Here are a few progression pictures of Andrew's rash.

The reason I decided to take the picture was because he had a bite previous to this one that broke out with the bullseye rash too and I wanted to document EVERYTHING!  I thought it was interesting that there was the white rash around the tick.  I have no idea how long the tick had been there since it was the back of his arm and was covered by his sleeve.  This is not a deer tick but a dog tick.

The above picture shows the site after I removed the tick and you can also see a rash that extended up his arm to the top of his shoulder.

24 hours later

48 hours later

72 hours later

I'm so glad that I took the pictures.  From day 3 to day 5 the rash stayed the same and has slowly faded and started to dry out.  I printed out all of my pictures and commentary and have them filed in a binder with info. about his meds, supplements, resources and doctor info.

3.  We are working to train our adorably stubborn Yorkie, Lizzy to potty outside rather than on pee pads.  Her pervious owners trained her to use the pads and it is proving to be quite difficult to break her of them.  I resorted to buying little doggie diapers that she wears during the day and we take her out to potty every hour when she is awake.  I've heard many people who have or are familiar with Yorkie's that they often take up to two years to train!  Thankfully she'll be two this November.  She is very smart  but stubborn like a cat.  :)

4.  After almost a year and a half of searching, a friend found the pattern for these embroidery towels.

However, it is a machine embroidered pattern.  I don't know anything about machine patterns and haven't found a place to buy an iron on.  Does anyone know if the machine patterns would be traceable or what kind of format to get?

5.  Andrew just brought in a bouquet of dandelions with stems well over 15 inches long!  :)

Growing in Love with Jesus, part 1

The Christian isn't just to know about Jesus - we are called to know Him.  When I met my husband, almost 26 years ago, I knew about him but I didn't personally know him.  As we spent time together I grew to learn more about who he was, what his character was like, the things he took pleasure in and the things that he was strongly opposed to.  As I began to spend more time with him and got to know him, I fell in love with him.  Praise the Lord, I am still learning and still falling in love with him.  :-)

This is true of our relationship with Jesus too.  The more time we spend with him, getting to know Him through His word, through quiet times of sharing together and in service to Him the more we will fall in love with Him.  He desires us to have this close relationship with Him.  He doesn't want to be some far off thought or duty.  He doesn't want to be the top item on our daily to do list.  He wants to be our everything.  He wants to be the center of our lives and He should be!

Growing in love with the Lord takes intentionality, we are told to seek after Him with our whole heart and when we do He will be found by us.  (Jeremiah 29:12-13)  Seeking Him with our whole heart isn't crossing off "Quiet time" on our to-do list and then moving on with our day, although there does need to be a committed discipline of making the time to spend with Him..  Seeking after Him with our whole heart is turning to Him in every moment of our day, in times of rejoicing, in times of sadness or frustrations, it is becoming aware of how and what we are spending our time on and then making adjustments accordingly.

Seeking after and growing in love with the Lord should be our response to His loving us and for no other reason than wanting to return that love.  Any other reason will cause us to fall back empty and frustrated because our focus isn't on being with Him but rather on what we are getting from Him.  We were created to be in fellowship with Him, our spirits long for this fellowship with Him and once we have experienced it we will never be satisfied with anything less.

"For He satisfies the longing soul, and fills the hungry soul with goodness"  Psalm 107:9

The Simple Woman's Daybook

Outside my window... It is an overcast afternoon.  It seems to be warming up and there is some humidity in the air as well but I am chilled.

I am hearing...  Beethoven, more specifically Symphony No. 9, while the boys work in their journals and I blog.

I am thinking ...  of the family from MN who lost their precious little 2 year old girl this holiday weekend when she went missing.  She had been missing for almost 2 days before they found her little body down river.  Dear Lord, please comfort this grieving family.

I am thankful for ...
  • Four days with my husband home
  • An afternoon and evening of fun and fellowship with friends after church on Sunday.
  • That we got our lawn mower fixed and have the lawn mowed now.  It was looking a bit like a jungle.
  • A safe delivery for an online friend and the precious gift of a son.
In the kitchen... Hot biscuits with honey for an afternoon snack.

I am wearing... Jeans, a green tee, my crocs and am also cuddled under a blanket.

I am creating... dishcloths.  The drive to church or town affords me extra time to knit if I'm not the driver.  I like to have a nice collection of them available for quick hostess gifts, thank you's or special occasions.

I am going... to see a Lymes doctor on Thursday with Andrew.

I am praying for ... my summer ~ I took a break from Facebook as I've really been feeling like the Lord has been asking me to let some things go so that I can be with him.  I have a great excitement and expectation about having more time to be with Him.

I am reading... I'm still reading A Love that Multiplies by the Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar.  I just ordered a new book, Heart to Heart Stories for Moms, that I am looking forward to reading per the recommendation of a dear friend from church.

I am hoping...  that I can take a short nap this afternoon.

I am looking forward to... warmer weather, hopefully soon.  Its so chilly and damp.

I am learning... that no one can comfort like Jesus can.  Other people can only be flesh to flesh comfort but Jesus can reach in and touch my spirit, bring it comfort and peace.

Around the house... slow progress on our building project because of all the cold, rainy weather we've had, however it enabled us to spend more time together and to accept an invitation to have a meal with friends.

In the learning room...  We are on week 2 of our new curriculum.  I think Andrew is enjoying our daily book basket time best.  We are going VERY slowly with double digit multiplication, praying that it "clicks" one of these days.  The biggest hurdle to get over is the one he's created in his mind in thinking that it is too hard.

One of my favorite things...  an afternoon with a cup of warm tea, beautiful music and knitting.

A few plans for the rest of the week:   Two doctor appointments for Andrew.  One with our general and one with the Lymes specialist.  A trip to the library, Whole Foods and Trader Joe's.

A picture I'm sharing... My beautiful crab apple trees that line our driveway.  This picture is from 2 years ago.  Because of the late Spring and off season weather my trees barely blossomed this year.  :(  The little they did happened this week as opposed to their normal date around the 10th of May.

My Portion

Teach me, O LORD, the way of thy statutes; and I shall keep it unto the end.

Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy law; yea, I shall observe it with my whole heart.

Make me to go in the path of thy commandments; for therein do I delight.

Incline my heart unto thy testimonies, and not to covetousness.

Turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity, and quicken thou me in thy way.

Stablish thy word unto thy servant, who is devoted to thy fear.

Thou art my portion, O LORD, I have said that I would keep thy words.

Psalm 119:33-38, 57

Rainy Day - Daybook

Long time no blog!!  Our family has been busy, busy, busy!  Here is a little bit of a daybook catch-up.

Outside my window... a cool, rainy day.

I am hearing... a movie that Andrew is watching.  He is having daily afternoon rest periods on the couch.  We are both cuddled up under blankets.

I am thinking ... about the current health trial of Lymes that Andrew is being treated for.

I am thankful for ...

  • Discovering the Lymes rash within the first week and for the prompt treatment that was started.
  • a long over-do lunch with a precious friend.
  • my husband being home for 5 days, beginning tomorrow.
  • my friend Denise who was promoted to Heaven after her battle with cancer ended over a week ago.  I'll miss her so dearly but am comforted to know that I will see her again.

In the kitchen... Pretty basic meals right now.  We are cutting out most sugar, dairy and gluten to help Andrew as he heals.  Because Lyme's is an inflamatory disease, eating foods that are anti-inflamatory is best for healing.

I am wearing... my work out pants, an orange t-shirt and socks - and a warm fleece blanket on top.  :)

I am creating... No crafting at the moment.  I am creating new summer school routines as we'll be schooling through the summer.

I am going... to stay snuggled up in my home today.

I am re-reading... A Love that Multiplies

I am hoping... that I wont be sore after walking an hour on the treadmill this morning.  :)

I am looking forward to... Bible study here at my home tomorrow morning.  We are halfway through the Beth Moore Breaking Free study.

Around the house... lots of construction going on.  Since I've last blogged we've begun to slowly replace our old log home and windows into a newly framed, vinyl sided home.

A few plans for the rest of the week:   Bible study, and lots of family time.

A few picture I'm sharing..  Lots of pictures to share.  :)

Andrew made the Greece flag from lego's

Learning about the food chain for our science study.

Chloe had 4 kittens on May 3rd.  It has been so fun to watch her and the kittens.

A new addition to our family.   This is Lizzy, a 3.7 pound minature yorkie.  She is a 1.5 years old and needed a new forever home.  She has been such a joy to have and is full of personality.  Don't tell her she's a yorkie though because she doesn't know she's little.  She thinks she's as big as a German Shepherd.

Kitchen wall coming out.

There's a whole in my house!

My  precious friend Denise.  She and I walked together for years.  Now she's walking on streets of gold!  Love and miss you, Denise!
